Tibetan Gau Prayer Box With Turquoise Colored Stones – Brass, Gilt
This exquisite Vintage Tibetan gau (also spelled ghau) prayer box is richly adorned with dozens of turquoise colored cabochons meticulously inlaid into a hand-forged brass form with bright metallic interior. Traditionally used as a portable shrine, gau boxes held sacred relics, protective amulets, or prayers and were worn or carried by travelers and pilgrims.
The piece features a domed oval egg form, hinged to open and reveal a hand-hammered, gilded interior. A central raised cartouche likely once held an image of a deity or blessing symbol. The turquoise colored accents vary slightly in hue and matrix, suggesting natural, hand-cut origin — a hallmark of authentic Himalayan craftsmanship.
Dimensions: Approx. 3.5" W x 2.5" D x 1.75" H
Condition: Missing one cabochon, as pictured. I cannot verify cabochon material.
