Indonesian Coiled Rattan Basket With Carved Wood Lid

A striking Vintage handwoven rattan coiled basket featuring an intricate bulbous form, Triangle design details and an inset carved wood lid with animal motif - appears to be a boar. Likely originating from Southeast Asia — Borneo (Dayak) -this basket would have been used for ceremonial or personal storage. The rich patina and tight weaving reflect skilled craftsmanship.

As you can see in the pictures this basket has a wood medallion base which is pierced to anchor the coiling. The coiled material has an organic non symmetrical form as it moves upward, which is characteristic of a handmade basket made in this technique and material. The lid fits snuggly to the top and also is anchored with a wood medallion with carved decoration. This is a fairly large example of this technique.
