Product Spotlight:

Lapid Pottery was founded in 1944 during the British Mandate period in Israel. Designers including Elspeth Cohen, Dr. Bertha Rosenthal, Ray Silverman, and Dvora Gazit lead creation of the distinctive forms and shapes Lapid is know for while the head decorator guided the designs — a collaborative process. Decorators would hand paint the designs onto the pottery, creating subtle variations between pieces and ensuring that each one is unique.

All Lapid art pieces are slip-cast stoneware fired to 1250°C — unusually high for this type of pottery — which adds exceptional strength and durability. Nearly all Lapid art pottery is hand painted with oxides or glaze, with techniques like wax-resist and sgraffito frequently used as decoration. Lapid was also notable for producing kitchen ware completely free of lead, being the only commercial pottery in Israel able to do so

In 1957, the company was purchased by Koor Industries - becoming a staple of Israeli domesticware. The factory closed on July 31, 1990, after 47 years of production. In recent decades, collectors have rediscovered Israeli pottery, and Lapid pieces that once sat forgotten are now recognized for the art pieces that they are.
